Full-Time- Cafe & Store Associate Wanted (2024)

Who are we? Tamarack Outdoors (Waterton) is a legacy outdoor outfitters with mixed retail, cafe, guiding and shuttle operations in Waterton Lakes National Park. We hire a small but mighty team of adventure lovers from May-September to work in our family business and to experience a Summer working in the best National Park in the Canadian Rockies! 

Who do we want on our team? You love talking to people and have strong sales and customer service skills. We would prefer someone with experience in a cafe/espresso bar environment. You have a passion for the outdoors and want to experience as much of Waterton as you can! You can think on your feet, work hard, and work well with a team. To break it down further:

Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service:

    • Greet and assist customers in a friendly and approachable manner.

    • Provide product knowledge and advice on outdoor gear, equipment, and park-related information.

    • Foster a positive shopping experience by engaging with customers and addressing their needs.

  • Barista/Cafe Duties:

    • Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, tea, and specialty drinks.

    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of a busy, multi-faceted ‘micro’ kitchen

    • Prep, cook and bake ‘light’ cafe fair, including bag lunches and bakery items

  • Retail Sales:

    • Assist customers in selecting and purchasing outdoor gear, clothing, and accessories.

    • Process transactions accurately using the point-of-sale (POS) system.

    • Keep the retail area well-stocked, organized, and visually appealing.

  • Inventory Management:

    • Monitor and replenish stock levels of merchandise and coffee supplies.

    • Conduct regular inventory counts and report discrepancies.

    • Work with the management team to optimize inventory turnover and minimize stockouts.

  • Visitor Information:

    • Provide information about the National Park, including trail maps, wildlife, and recreational activities.

    • Assist visitors in planning their outdoor adventures and recommend suitable gear.

    • Stay informed about park events, rules, and regulations to effectively communicate with visitors.

Qualifications:

  • Customer Service Skills:

    • Friendly and approachable demeanor.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English. Other spoken languages are an asset to this position!

  • Barista Experience:

    • Previous experience in a barista role preferred.

    • Knowledge of coffee brewing techniques and a passion for delivering quality beverages.

    • Food service/counter service experience is an asset.

  • Retail Experience:

    • Retail sales experience in a fast-paced environment.

    • Ability to upsell and cross-sell products to meet customer needs.

  • Outdoor Enthusiast:

    • Passion for outdoor activities and knowledge of outdoor gear.

    • Comfortable sharing personal outdoor experiences with customers.

  • Organizational Skills:

    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

    • Ability to manage inventory and keep the retail space well-organized.

  • Flexibility:

    • Willingness to adapt to a dynamic work environment.

    • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Working Conditions:

This role requires standing for extended periods, working in varying weather conditions, and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Weekend and holiday availability may be required. Shifts are 8 hours long, with a 1-hour (unpaid) break ½ way through the shift.
