Nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta’s deep Southwest corner, this small town offers a variety of activities for families that love to explore, learn, and stay active. It also happens to be the gateway to Waterton Lakes National Park, itself a world class tourist destination! Here’s a four-day itinerary perfect for an active family, including kids, to make the most of what this area has to offer.

Day 1: Step Back in Time at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

Start your weekend with a visit to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. This outdoor museum is a fascinating trip back in time. The kids will love exploring the historic buildings, including a schoolhouse, a church, and several log cabins whose original inhabitants homesteaded in the area. You’ll get a glimpse into life in the late 1800s, and there are fun, interactive exhibits for everyone. There are often chances to dress up and become a part of the story- you could easily spend a whole day here! The whole family will enjoy exploring around the historical village, making it an easy and educational way to kick off your weekend. Grab lunch at the on-site cafe or one of the many lunch spots in Downtown Pincher Creek. SEEDS Cafe has a diverse menu with yummy baking for everyone.

End your first day indulging in excellent sushi, Korean and Asian food at Soo Sushi in Pincher Creek. They have a great kid’s menu, are fully licensed, and have become a regional favourite for their fresh and delicious offerings. Try their Ramen, it’s amazing!

Day 2: Biking and exploring at Beauvais Lake Provincial Park

On your second day, it's time to get the bikes out for some outdoor fun! Beauvais Lake Provincial Park offers easy mountain biking trails that are perfect for families. The trails wind through the scenic forest and grasslands and provide great views of the lake. If you have younger kids, the flat, smooth paths are ideal for them to bike safely. After a few laps, enjoy a picnic by the lake or take a peaceful paddle in the calm waters. It’s a great way to immerse yourselves in nature while staying active. Make sure you hit up Miner’s Mercantile on a quick detour to Beaver Mines in the afternoon. They have great snacks, lunch and ice cream for everyone!

For great pizza, drinks and apres-hike or bike, check out the T-Bar at Castle Mountain Resort! Patio vibes, plenty of room for the kids to run around the base area, and enjoyable pub-fare make this a family favourite after an action packed adventure day.

Day 3: Day Trip to Waterton Lakes National Park

For a day of breathtaking mountain views, pack up early and head to Waterton Lakes National Park, just a short drive away. This world-famous National Park is perfect for families who love the outdoors. Whether you’re hiking the well groomed trails or taking a scenic drive through the park, there’s something for everyone. Grab a hiker’s lunch at Switchback Micro-Cafe in Tamarack Outdoors and hit the trail! Don’t miss the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel for a family photo with a view, and if the kids have energy left, take time to explore the village and all of its shopping and eating out treasures. It’s a day trip that’s bound to leave everyone with lasting memories.

To cap off your trip, on the drive back to Pincher Creek make sure to enjoy a delicious dinner at Twin Butte General Store, a local favorite. Half way between Pincher and Waterton, this Tex-Mex roadhouse is unique and award-winning! The food here is hearty and delicious, with a great variety of options for everyone in the family. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cozy meal after an action-packed weekend.
